Glen Powell: “I’m Not Playing James Bond”

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Glen Powell, star of Hitman and Top Gun: Maverick, told The Hollywood Reporter that he has no intention of playing Glen Powell

, saying Amazon MGM should continue the tradition of casting a British actor in the role.

The 36-year-old actor, who has recently joined multiple projects, said: “I’m a Texan. A Texan shouldn’t play James Bond. I joke with my family that I could play Jimmy Bond, but I shouldn’t play him. Cast a real British actor for that role. That tuxedo belongs to someone like that.”

The character of James Bond, a British superspy first created in Ian Fleming’s 1950s novels, has traditionally been brought to the screen by English and Irish actors. Daniel Craig played the role for the fifth and final time in No Time to Die.

Following the departure of the franchise’s longtime producers, Amazon has tapped Denis Villeneuve to direct the 26th James Bond film and Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders, to write the screenplay. No actor has yet been announced for the role.

After Sony’s hit romantic comedy Anyone But You, Powell has appeared in Twisters and Hitman directed by Richard Linklater, and will star in Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man, releasing in theaters this November. He also stars in and co-wrote the upcoming Hulu series Chad Powers, premiering September 30.

Elsewhere in the interview, Powell said he hopes to direct one day: “I’d love to direct. Right now, I’m in film school, getting to work with Richard Linklater, Lee Isaac Chung, J.J. Abrams, and Edgar Wright. I’m collaborating with the heroes of my life.”

In recent years, rumors have circulated about actors Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Richard Madden, Henry Cavill, Idris Elba, and Tom Holland being in talks to take on the role of James Bond
